Cheers to Fenwick!

A few days ago I had the honour of being invited to the launch of the new fine dining food court at the centre of the upscale department store – Fenwick – in Newcastle, England, and I can tell you that the new concept is just explosive!

So, for my Frenchies and my international darlings, this new space in Fenwick could be compared to LA GRANDE ÉPICERIE in Paris for example, or to Dean & Deluca in New-York. To help you understand what Fenwick means to the English, let’s just say it’s the sanctuary for good taste in fashion, decor, accessories, beauty, jewellery and from now on, an unforgettable culinary experience.

This new space is mainly comprised of a fine deli store with a large choice of products sourced from all over the world. It’s the kind of place where you can travel just by reading the product labels! 🙂

You also find several types of restaurant in this newly renovated hall:

  • FUEGO: An Italian establishment where it smells of delicious Mediterranean cuisine. This restaurant was created with the help of a celebrated chef, well known in England, Terry Laybourne – Again! We love him – (Michelin star restaurant the Girasol in Moraira in Espagne and Le Bodega de Tapas, a bar that Time Out named in the 50 best places in Camden. It will be run by the chef Darren Busby (from the top Italian restaurant, Caffé Vivo in Newcastle).
  • KO SAI : A fusion restaurant of the many different flavours of Asiatic cuisine. This culinary corner is headed by Terry Laybourne, and accompanying him in the kitchen, chef Parichat Somsri-Kirby, from Thailand.
  • SALTWATER FISH CO: An oyster bar and restaurant offering calamari, all types of seafood, crab sandwiches and a specially selected wine menu to accompany each dish.
  • MASON + RYE: A pastry shop and bakery worthy of a Parisian establishment (so rare in England) with a large selection of cakes and breads of all kinds.

Nearby to the restaurants you will also find an alcohol department with a large whiskey selection (200 brands), gin selection (40 brands), rare liquors (A ladder is at your disposal to access all these liquid treasures, in the style of a library,), lots of champagne and an incredible wine cellar where a sommelier from the 5-star hotel, Rockliffe Hall, can advise you.

The particularity of the wine area is that you can find a wine distributor (an almost unique concept in the form of 50ml doses). This has been introduced to allow customers to sip wines from around the world at optimum temperatures, providing a unique discovery experience.

You can also take advantage of a cheese and cold meat counter (the French cheese HENNART is sold here. Hooray!).

On the sweet side of things, you can find a magnificent selection of chocolates and sweets, and you can get fresh fruit juice from the THE NAKED DELI.

The design concept of this Food Hall was entrusted to the London agency CADA Design who has worked with huge labels and international establishments such as Dean & DelucaHarrodsFortnum & Mason and Charbonnel et Walker.

I had the opportunity to talk to Rhys McKinnell, the Head of Food and Catering at the heart of Fenwick, Newcastle. He told me that they have conducted many customer surveys prior to the redesign, in order to better understand their preferences in terms of the culinary experience. He hopes that this new Food Hall will fulfil all of their expectations. Personally, I’m not worried!

In short, this new space makes for a unique, bold dining and retail experience. I think I will be returning very often! Cheers to Fenwick!
